When you try to use this expression with a native English speaker, they will understand at the same time that you’re talking about really hot weather.
Especially the hottest days of the summer, so they use the expression DOG DAYS to refer to days extremely hot.
It’s weird to think about that because what is the relation between the words DOG and DAYS to mean HOT WEATHER, right?
I was talking to some foreign friends of mine and they explained me the origins about the DOG DAYS, and as a good teacher, I’m going to share everything I learned from them with you!
Dogs are not the only animals uncomfortable with the hot weather but the word DOG here is not mentioning the animal at all, we are talking about the name of a very famous STAR that is usually born with the sun, at about the same time!
So, when somebody says we will have a DOG DAY, it means that the star dog was born with the sun and they will together make the weather extremely hot!
Let’s see some examples right now to contextualize everything we’ve just learned, alright?
🇺🇸 You can’t go out without sunscreen in these dog days.
🇧🇷 Você não pode sair sem protetor solar nesse calor infernal.
🇺🇸 He drank boiling coffee even in the dog days.
🇧🇷 Ele bebeu café fervendo mesmo nos dias mais quentes.
Alright, now it’s time for me to challenge you and check if you can understand my questions, okay?
